Runewall - Hydrocal plaster with acrylic and gold foil RETURN TO SCULPTURE GALLERY

Runewall
6 pairs of duo-toned runes hover in a flowing maelstrom of shadow.

This piece is a study, a preparation for a much larger work that is forthcoming. As it stands, it is an evocative presentation of the runes themselves, but there is a disjointed quality, a lack of cohesion and purpose, that renders it a little flat. The runes are there but they aren't DOING anything, not making or articulating anything. It's like a runic periodic table (which has been rendered alchemically - and beautifully - at the ChemSoc web site).

In spite of it's static nature, there's something alluring in this piece for me. Maybe it's the contrast of fluidity in the background with the rigid form of the runes in the foreground. Maybe it's the feeling of pressure, of strain against the imposed constraints of the piece. It feels like a wall that's holding something back.

For now, I think I'll just keep my finger in the dam. Later... who knows.
