This was a study for a future creation, a multi-paneled
work exploring archetypal forms. The real challenge
in this piece was the fusing of human and reptilian
anatomy, taking recognizable structures and distorting
them without losing all sense of reality.
Dragons are one of those mythical figures
that appear in nearly all cultures. The notion of a
supreme being, a creature of elemental power that soars
amid the heavens or roams the caverns of the Earth is
a vital component to many cosmologies. Western hearts
transformed them into destroyers - consistent with the
corruption of the serpent into a symbol of evil - but
most other cultures ascribe more natural (if not benevolent)
qualities to these grand beings.
For myself, the dragon is a fusion of
humanity's highest ideals and aspirations as well as
our darkest fears. Within the dragon, the full scope
of our potential is expressed and amplified to the highest
magnitude. The form of the dragon represents the potential
to achieve a balance in the maelstrom of infinite possibilities,
a creature of enormous power and an all-encompassing
awareness connected directly to the "source"
of all things.
