| The Talon Cross
This piece combines the symetry and geometrics that
I am continuously drawn to with a course organic foundation.
The resulting "Form-out-of-Chaos" effect enhances
the edge established by the gold shapes in the foreground.
This is one in a series of pieces using
arrangements of forms cast in Hydrocal plaster, a rock
hard and durable gypsum-based plaster. After creating
the forms in clay, the objects were coated in a think
layer of liquid latex that would serve as the mold.
The resulting castings were then arranged into diverse
works like this one.
Talon Cross in one of my favorite works
of sculpture. It's not a "safe" piece of art...
the gold talon pieces come together to form a kind of
portal you'd think twice before entering. There is a
seductive cruelty to the whole arrangement that is both
alluring and disturbing. The metallic sharpness of the
talons is offset by the undulant red and black background,
with form and hue both vying for attention and dominance.
The result is a precarious balance that endures... for
the moment.
